Jan Grarup was born in 1968
inDenmark.
In the course of his eighteen-year career he has been travelling around the
world to document the largest armed conflicts and instances of human rights
violations. The motivation behind Grarup’s work is the belief that
reportage photography is a mission which, in his opinion, is to serve the
purpose of recording change in the world and making public all the dramatic
events whose victims are too powerless to tell their stories themselves.
To date Grarup has been the recipient of numerous prestigious photographic
awards as well as awards distributed by human rights organisations. Among the
most renown are two nominations for the W. Eugene Smith award, eight awards in
the World Press Photo competition and a special recognition award in the Leica Oskar
Barnack competition, two UNICEF prizes and many others such as Picture of the
Year or the award of the US National Press Photographers Association. The
photographer is the author of many books and has had solo exhibitions arranged
in 15 countries. In 2006, Grarup released the album “SHADOWLAND”. The next book
entitled “Darfur: A Silent Genocide” will be
published in spring 2008 by Trolley Press London. Jan Grarup is a collaborator
of Danish daily Politiken and his work regularly appears in periodicals
such as Newsweek, Guardian, Sunday Times, Stern, GEO,
Paris Match, L’Express, La Repubblica and other magazines
worldwide. He lives on the outskirts of Copenhagen
with his wife and their three children.
